Joy beyond Belief explores the profound experience of transcending the limitations of thought, emotion, and belief and entering into the sacred silence in which we discover our true self, made in the image and likeness of God.
This exploration is grounded in a close reading of the Bible and the writings of a wide range of Christian authors over the last two millennia. The book also discusses transcendent experience as described by authors from a diverse range of historical periods and cultures, including Plato, Lao Tzu, Jalāl al-Din Muhammad Rūmi, Rabbi Dov Baer of Mezeritch, Henry David Thoreau, and T. S. Eliot.
The book concludes that it is time to move beyond our culturally constrained images of Jesus and embrace a vision of him as the embodiment in human form of the transcendent wisdom that is “the true light that enlightens everyone.”
